How do I know what type of headache I'm having?

Headaches include more than 150 different types of head pain. The main categories of headache are:

Primary headaches

Primary headaches are the most common type. They include tension or stress headaches, migraines, cluster headaches, and others.

Primary headaches aren’t related to an underlying medical condition, but certain lifestyle factors like drinking red wine, lack of sleep, and skipped meals may contribute.

Secondary headaches

Secondary headaches are tied to a medical condition, so they typically go away once your underlying condition resolves.

They can range from mild dehydration or sinus headaches to serious spinal headaches and “thunderclap” headaches following a brain bleed, head injury, or other potentially severe condition.

Primary headaches occur only once in a while for many people. Others, however, experience chronic headaches at least half of the days in any given month.

When do I need treatment for a headache?

If you have chronic headaches, they likely disrupt your life. You might miss work, have to spend the day in bed, and avoid other people when in the midst of a headache.

Some headaches can last for days. Some migraines, for example, can linger for three days, during which time you might not be able to do anything at all.

If any of this sounds familiar, it’s important to know that headaches don’t have to take over your life. Olympus Spine and Pain offers leading-edge treatments that prevent headaches from robbing your life of time and joy.

How are migraines different from other headaches?

Migraines are particularly intense headaches, often featuring pulsing or throbbing pain. Many people with migraines also experience auras and sensory disturbances that affect vision, touch, or speech.

In addition, migraines tend to be especially draining. It’s very common to feel exhausted after the pain subsides.

What are the treatments for a headache?

Dr. Warner diagnoses the cause of your chronic headaches and recommends leading-edge treatments to help you get back to life on your own terms. He often recommends a multifaceted approach that may include:

  • Oral medication
  • Trigger management (changes in habits, eating, and other behaviors)
  • Botox® for migraines
  • Nerve block injections
  • Trigger point injections
  • Implantable neuromodulation devices
  • Ketamine infusions*

Treatment can dramatically reduce, if not eliminate, the occurrence and intensity of your headaches and greatly enhance your quality of life.
